Word by word or line by line?
Word by word is best for prose, contracts and essays. Line by line is clearer for lists, code, spreadsheets pasted as text and long documents.
How is the similarity calculated?
It is the share of words (or lines) the two versions have in common: 100% means identical texts, values near 0% mean almost nothing in common.
Does it ignore spaces and capital letters?
No - it shows every change, including a changed capital letter or an extra line break, so nothing slips through.
