Frequently asked questions
What is Unix time?
The number of seconds that have passed since 1 January 1970, 00:00:00 UTC (the "epoch"). It is the standard way computers store and compare points in time.
Seconds or milliseconds?
Unix timestamps are traditionally in seconds. Many APIs and JavaScript itself use milliseconds instead - if your numbers look 1000 times too large, switch the unit selector.
Does this account for time zones?
A Unix timestamp itself has no time zone - it is a single point in time. This tool shows that point converted to both your local time zone and UTC so you can compare them.
